Introduction to White Water Kayaking (Article #6)

Rating: ****

This article gives the basics of White Water Kayaking and explains all the gear you'll need and the basic skills you'll need to help you.

Since the Ottawa area is said to be one of the best regions worldwide for white water kayaking, it's a good idea to have a basic guide for anyone looking to begin this. Before doing this of course, you may want to go "back to school" and brush up on your kayaking skills, experience and knowledge. And don't think just because you're weak you can't do it, or because you're strong that it'll be easy. Technique and finesse are a lot more important that brute strength. Next, gear up. It's important to make sure you have the right kayak and paddles, as well as a PFD (personal flotation device) and a life jacket. Make sure you have a helmet, throwbags (rope) and a dry bag to keep extra clothes in, just in case of an emergency. Before stepping out to the rapids, make sure you KNOW the basic strokes and how to kayak. Once you're gear is prepared, you're mentally ready and you know how to kayak, get out there! Be safe, have fun and learn a cool new pass time. White water kayaking can be very enjoyable and almost so fun it's addicting if you know exactly what you're doing!
