Avalanches, Part 1: The Basics

Avalanches, Part 1: The Basics by Julie Eiselt
Rating: ****

“Avalanches, Part 1: The Basics” is an article worth the read. It teaches you how to be calm during the event of getting caught in an avalanche, how to be prepared for one and how it can be prevented.

The article starts off by letting you know how important it is to be efficient with an avalanche receiver so that you can be found. Being caught in an avalanche is a very serious thing and that if you’re stuck under snow; you don’t have a lot of time. Around 70% of avalanche fatalities are due to suffocation. Secondly, it tells you about the types of avalanches and the difference between them. Lastly, the article gives detailed descriptions about the contributing factors of an avalanche.

I like this article a lot and I think the only way it could have been improved is with some pictures. I would definitely recommend this article to people and to read part 2 and 3 about avalanches in case of the unfortunate event that they get caught in one.
