A Tragedy That Could Have Been Avoided - Kim Knight

Rating: ****

This is an article about a teacher and 6 grade 12 students dying after drowning while canyoning at the Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoor Pursuits Centre.

A girl, Tara Gregory, sent her mother a text saying “Bye-bye mommy” jokingly before handing in her phone. Her mother instantly panicked, which she had a right to, and never saw her daughter again. Instructor Jodie Sullivan decided to enter what has been described as a “maelstrom” of water. She survived, along with 3 other students. The teacher of the class, along with 6 other students, died due to drowning.

There is a lot to be learned from this such as not making sure the body of water you’re about to enter is not safe. If I ever go canyoning I will be sure to ask before we do anything and clarify if it is completely safe or not.
