THE HIGH STAKES OF ALTITUDE SICKNESS

THE HIGH STAKES OF ALTITUDE SICKNESS

This is an interesting and easy to understand article concerning the causes and effects of altitude sickness. I recommend this article for anyone interesting in hiking or curious readers.

The article begins by discussing the death of an inexperienced climber named Shah-Klorfine. Throughout the article, it explains the dangers of such hikes and terms such as AMS (acute mountain sickness), HACE (high altitude cerebral edema) and HAPE (high altitude pulmonary edema). It then explains how to prevent these illnesses and the treatments used such as simply taking drugs or descending the mountain.

I was not well educated in the potential problems of altitude sickness but am now very aware of the symptoms and how to treat them should I ever go on an adventure which might contain those types of risks. This article was very informative and will definitely keep me safer should I choose to participate in hiking related activities.
