The Happy Camper: Bug Season has Arrived - By Kevin Callan
Rating: ****

“The Happy Camper”, Kevin Callan explains the importance of knowing how to dress and prepare during those painfully annoying weeks as spring ends for those heading outdoors.

The beginning of summer and end of spring is definitely a beautiful time to head outdoors. However, camping becomes a living hell if you’re not prepared to defend yourself against the swarms of mosquitoes, blackflies, no-see-ums, and ticks that you will without a doubt encounter. Sometimes even the typical bug spray isn’t enough to keep them away. For example, dark colours seem to attract more than bright colours. Keeping that in mind could save you from the uncomfortable buzzing sound you could be hearing all day. Knowing where to use bug spray and how to keep bugs from getting into your clothes is also important. Even if bringing an outdoor kitchen tent seems ridiculous to your friends, you could be a lifesaver in some situations.

I was drawn in by this article because I have spent numerous weekends camping and dealing with the bugs. I always thought that the “mosquitoes are attracted to dark colours” thing was a myth, but now I know what I’ll be doing next time I’m camping. It taught me about how the bugs behave and the ways that are proven effective to defend against bites.
