In this article Kevin Callan compares modern snowshoes to the traditional style. First off the old style is much larger and heavier then any modern snowshoe today and the bindings on the old ones can be a pain. Modern snowshoes still come manly in one shape but the additions make them far superior. From ice picks to televator bars, new snowshoes have it all plus the fact that they weigh next to nothing and are far less bulky. He goes on to recommend the MSR Lightning Axis snowshoes which he finds to work the best in any scenario.
