Roz Savage: Why I'm Rowing Across The Pacific

Rating:***

The ted talk " Why I'm rowing across the pacific" by Roz Savage, is about why she is rowing across the pacific ocean alone in her boat. This was an interesting Ted talk because it showed that you could do anything that you want, even you are already stuck in something that you don't want to do.

Roz Savage is an Ocean rower, she spends a lot of time by herself in her boat on the ocean. Though she didn't start off as an adventurer. Roz Savage used to dream of being an adventurer but thought that you had to be a tall, buff man with a beard. So she grew up to work in an office building hating her job and wanting more out of life. So she decided to get out of her comfort zone and decided that she would row across the Atlantic Ocean. After planning her trip she finally left in the year 2005, though this was the year of hurricane Katrina. This was a bad year for tropical storms and she ended up losing all four of her oars before she was even half way across the Atlantic. She then had to make a lot of make shift oars to help her get across the Atlantic, and after more than 100 days she finally made it. She says that it was the most amazing feeling to make it to the other side, probably the most exciting thing she has ever done in her life. After this she needed something to top the experience, so she decided that there could only be one thing, to row the much more vast ocean, the Pacific. She figured out that it would be almost impossible to make it in one straight leg, so she turned into three, too Hawaii, then Tarawa, then finishing in Australia. Though the first time on her first leg she didn't do as well as she would have liked, she managed to tip three tips in 24 hours and was air lifted from her boat. This cost her a lot of time, because she had to excavate her boat out of the deep waters. The next year she tried again making it to Hawaii, with only a little bit of help from some people on a raft made of water bottles that were trying to bring awareness to how much garbage is being dumped into the oceans. After this she continued to Tarawa, a low lying island that has to be very wary of the rising waters. Roz tells us about the plan that the mayor had evacuate everyone on the island to Europe, because he fears that in 50 years his island will be completely under water. This is where Roz was at when she made this talk, about to leave and finish her long journey across the Pacific. If she makes it she will be the first woman to cross the Pacific ocean by solo rowing.

By doing this expedition Roz Savage wants to show the world three things, first that we can do anything that we put our minds to, that we don't need things like oil as much as we tell ourselves we do, there are other means of getting around other than with cars. Second that with the accumulation of tiny actions we can make the world a better or worse place, every decision we make affects the world, and third that each one of us needs to take the responsibility to help the future and do what we can to make it how we want to form it, not everything will be provided for us. This is something we should all consider in our own lives, Roz helps us by starting an apple app called "echo heroes" that will help anyone commit at least one good green action a day.
