Mountain lion spotted near school in Rapid City, South Dakota

Mountain lion spotted near school in Rapid City, South Dakota

At 5:30am on a Friday, Rapid City school spotted a mountain lion on their security cameras on the school premises. When this was discovered, the school went into lockdown for the rest of the day and requested parents find a different way home for their kids who planned to walk. Earlier in the week, Fish and Parks wildlife manager received a report of a wild cat spotting which was likely related. They brought out the search dogs in the hope of finding and driving it away from the area. In the end, the wild cat wasn’t found but luckily it also didn’t harm anyone.

I think the biggest affect this sort of article has is showing how close we are to the wildlife surrounding us. We are still safe in the confines of the city, but occasionally in stories like this, we’re closer than we think. This is just another reason to take extra safety precautions while going camping or something related when it is more likely to encounter dangerous animals in those areas.
